The Ancient History of Traditional Thai Massage

The Ancient Art of Thai Massage is said to date back some 2500 years, developing the finer techniques over time for the use in Healing of the injured and sick.

It is written that a Dr Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (known as Shivago Komarpaj to the Thai people) was the early creator and practitioner of this style of body treatment when he was believed to have travelled with the Buddha through Asia and into India. These teachings and practices found their way into Thailand through the migration of Monks from India and the early practise of Buddhism. Since being labelled as Traditional Thai Massage. Traditionally named “Nuad Bo Rarn”, Thai Tradition Massage documentation was all but lost in the Burmese battle of Ayutthaya in 1767. Some inscriptions are still in place at Wat Po in Bangkok, famously known as The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Ayutthaya being the original capital of early Siam (Thailand)

In early Thai Massage dating back thousands of years now, they incorporated the Herbal Ball Compress comprised of a fabric wrap encasing a mixture of herbs believed to help with the reduction of swelling and to speed up the healing of the Thai Warriors when they returned from battle. They would use steam to heat and moisten to compress before applying to swollen tissue or slight abrasions of the skin. Application can involve light pounding and massage of the body with the warm compress.
